Norwalk Virus Testing
CBI can test samples for the presence of Norovirus after an outbreak has occurred. CBI performs PCR and DNA sequence analysis that can confirmed the presence of Norovirus in the sample. CBI can confirm an outbreak or test to see if decontamination of the area has been effective.
A case study: CBI working in Pennsylvania with Allegheny County Health Officials tested the efficacy of decontamination for an 800-student, K-12 school in Coraopolis, PA closed March 23, 2004 after many children were absent or became ill during classes with vomiting and diarrhea. A norovirus, a common cause of such outbreaks, was suspected. About 180 people connected to the school came down with the illness. After closing the doors the school was disinfected. CBI tested the "hot spots" and confirmed the virus was destroyed. The school was reopened after CBI test results were negative for Norwalk virus.
